NEW YORK (AP) ? Rather than leave a 56-year-old uniform hanging in a closet at his Idaho home, Don Larsen decided it should be used for education.
He's auctioning off the Yankee pinstripes he wore in 1956 when he pitched the only perfect game in World Series history, and will use the proceeds to pay college tuition for his grandchildren, one in college and the other a high school freshman.
"I'm not getting any younger and I want to see them get an education before I leave," the 83-year-old Larsen said. "They'll be appreciative later, more so than now, I'm sure."
Similarly, Bob Knight is selling his NCAA championship rings and other mementos to fund education in his family. "I have two grandsons," the Hall of Fame basketball coach said, "and my wife has a niece and nephew, who would get good use out of this."
In fact, a slew of sports memorabilia is on the market, coincidentally or not, just ahead of possible tax increases that could eat up some of the proceeds.
Also up for auction in coming weeks are baseball star Ozzie Smith's Gold Gloves, Evander Holyfield's boxing championship belts and an original of the agreement Pete Rose signed when he was banned from baseball for life in 1989.
"Sounds like a bunch of guys with full expectations that the Bush tax cuts are going to expire by year's end and not be back for next year," said Steve Gill, associate professor of accounting at San Diego State's Lamden School of Accountancy.
And starting Jan. 1, there will be a new Medicare tax on income from investments for higher-earning people. The IRS hasn't issued rules yet, so money from the sale of collectibles may be subject to the new levy.
"The 3.8 percent Medicare tax would probably be the thing that immediately popped into my mind in terms of what folks may be thinking about," said David Boyle, Americas director of personal financial services for the accounting firm Ernst & Young.
Some athletes used to give away the shirts off their backs or leave them in the clubhouse at season's end. Not anymore.
"If I knew then what I know now, I would have saved all my uniforms," baseball Hall of Famer Yogi Berra said.
These days, polyester double-knit has replaced wool flannel uniforms, and the 10,000-plus outfits sent to the 30 big-league clubs by Majestic Athletic are highly desired by fans. But it is gear from decades ago that is more prized.
"It's just a more honest period of time. Things were clearer. Things were simpler," said Brandon Steiner, whose Steiner Sports Memorabilia is auctioning the Larsen jersey and Knight collection in an online sale that will end Dec. 5.
Retired athletes and auction houses took notice in May when a circa-1920 Babe Ruth jersey was sold by SCP Auctions for $4.4 million to Lelands.com, which had a buyer lined up.
"Now not everybody is going to have a $4.4 million piece of memorabilia, but they might have something that is worth between $25,000 and $250,000," said Ken Goldin of Goldin Auctions, which is selling the Rose agreement. "So different deals are being cut with the auction houses to bring that particular memorabilia to market while the players perceive it to be a good time to do so."
Larsen threw his last big-league pitch in 1967? when the average major league salary was $19,000. That would cover only a small slice of the price of top memorabilia these days.
In the same auction as the Ruth jersey, a 1934 Ruth Yankees cap that was owned by pitcher David Wells sold for $537,278, about $507,000 more than Wells paid for it.
The baseball that rolled through the legs of Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series sold in May for $418,250. Two years ago, the bat Kirk Gibson used for his game-winning home run for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first game of the 1988 World Series sold for $575,912.
Those were bargains compared with a rare 1909 Honus Wagner baseball card that sold for $2.35 million in 2007, then resold six months later for $2.8 million to Arizona Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick, who allowed baseball's Hall of Fame to display it.
"Sports people are nuts," Knight said. "Look at how much they would pay for Babe Ruth's cap or Honus Wagner's card. I guess these are people who want to own things, things that are the results of what someone else did in sports."
Wealthy sports junkies view a 1952 Mickey Mantle card the same way others look at their 401(k).
"While the stock market is up and down, and while real estate is up and down, the memorabilia market has really gained a lot of steam over the last couple years," said Goldin, whose Rose auction runs through Nov. 17.
Instead of being auctioned online, Holyfield's collection will be sold Nov. 30 at Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills, Calif., which also sells rock 'n' roll and Hollywood memorabilia.
"People look at these items not just as fans. They look at them as an investment. It's a way to diversify their portfolio," owner Darren Julien said. "We're very popular in Asia and Russia, and that's where a lot of the money is coming from. Items that used to sell for $8,000 to $10,000 can bring $200,000 to $300,000 now."
Holyfield, like Larsen, said he didn't consider the tax implications of selling items now rather than after the first of the year.
"This is something new to me," the former heavyweight champion said.
But the auction houses say the tax issues come up in the planning.
"As players get older, they certainly don't know what's going to happen with an estate tax, and I guess they figure they'd rather have it sold now than after they're passed and lose an unknown percentage," Goldin said.
And it extends beyond the sports sales.
"We've had other people, not just athletes, but we've had other celebrity personalities talk to us about that because it is an issue," Julien said.
In Gill's calculation, tax changes next year could push the rate on proceeds from these sales from 28 percent to 33 percent. In addition to the Medicare tax and the possibility of higher tax brackets, there could be a limitation on itemized deductions for higher-income people.
"I might just hurry up and sell it right now," Gill said. "Anything you would be selling in the near term, hurry up and sell in December."

In her latest update to the Harvard Business School MBA admissions blog, Director Dee Leopold explained what happens today for Round 1 applicants waiting anxiously for news of their status. To recap, potential candidates can expect to receive either an invitation to interview,? placement on the waitlist, or be released.
For those who received an email notification today with interview details, congratulations! However, if you were not successful in your R1 application to Harvard, you should know that while the blow certainly stings, it truly is better to know now so that you may refocus your energies on your other target schools and perhaps the next round deadlines.
While placement on the waitlist can be frustrating, or even feel like a disappointment, we think applicants should really pay close attention to how Leopold explains the process, and the odds. The waitlist is where promising candidates end up when there has been an array of outstanding applicants in a particular round, and yes, this is good news, because it means you?re still in the running!
At Harvard Business School, placement on the waitlist means the admissions committee wants to re-review your candidacy after they see Round 2? applications. In the best case, you would be invited to interview on the R2 timetable; otherwise, the school will inform you of your release in mid-February.
?We anticipate that approximately 100 Round 1 applicants will be asked to join the waitlist on October 24,? Leopold says, later explaining that, ?Last year, we interviewed 48 Round 1 candidates who were placed on this early waitlist before interview and admitted 24 of them.?
Those odds may be longer than you?d like, but for a top-notch MBA program, many applicants are happy to take their chances.
For more on this topic, read our post from the spring with advice for accepted, waitlisted and denied MBA applicants.

Partnering with an affiliate marketing company is a great method of creating a second stream of income on your website. However, you must know some information in order to find success for your affiliate and you. This article will share techniques and information that other affiliate marketers have found effective.
It is very possible to generate substantial profits from affiliate marketing, though in-depth knowledge is critical if you are to achieve real success. It is best to have your site rank as high as possible with the search engines. You will get more cash and better affiliate links this way.
Consider writing handwritten advertisements, then scan and put it on your site. A personal touch like this can improve sales drastically due to the public realizing that a real person runs the business. Hire a freelancer to compose the advertisement if your longhand is illegible.
When putting in affiliate links, think of all the accessory items you can include in your website. One thing leads to another. Think of all the potential needs of a person starting on this course of action.
Successful affiliate marketers run newsletters that people want to get on the mailing list for. Several years ago, people used to love getting emails. Now, people are worried about spam getting into their inbox, so it would be helpful to make a newsletter that is user friendly.
Affiliate markets need to be proud of the products they sell. You can explain how the product has helped you by posting articles and reviews about it on the Internet. In addition, you can participate in different forums to discuss how this product has been helpful to you. Always remember to affix affiliate links to the bottom of any post, article or review. This will generate more affiliate revenue for you and gives customers a direct way to purchase your products.
Affiliate Companies
Choose affiliate companies that are supportive and help their affiliates by sharing resources that can help sell their products. It is rare to find affiliate companies that are stupid. They will do research to know what kind of marketing will work. Companies that are successful help their affiliates by providing them with good marketing data that will help them succeed and earn more commissions.
Creating a separate website for affiliates can increase sales of your products and services. Always make sure that your affiliate program is presented clearly in order to increase your partners. Besides attracting additional customers, a properly optimized site can also attract additional affiliates.
Try using paid advertising to make more money. Try and get your ads to target popular keywords as a means to increase both your sales and the amount of visitors of your site. Increasing traffic leads to increased sales for your products and services.
Make sure you attract a good audience for the products you sell with affiliate partners. Use low-click through and high-volume approaches for cheap products. The more expensive a product is, the more focused your selling efforts must be.
An affiliate program that works for one person may not work for you. The amount of flexibility can vary as well as product variation.
Google Plus
Build your followers on Google Plus to get a head start on the competition. Make your Google Plus ID known amongst your followers on Facebook and Twitter, and place the Google Plus icon for your website right next to the other links on your site for social media. Have good content so that people will want to follow you.
You should find that the tips provided in this article will be a huge help in forming a successful affiliate marketing strategy. Stay on top of new marketing information as it comes to light in order to remain current. Have affiliates sell your products for you, to generate additional revenue for you besides your direct product sales income. This way, you accomplish two things with one effort. ?
To your prosperity,
Mike

Do you know what the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary, Microsoft?s Hacking Competition and your Sunday potluck party has in common? All of them are results of crowdsourcing. When Linda offered her new book for free last week in exchange for reviews, it was also an act of crowdsourcing.
This phenomenon has existed for hundreds years, but the Internet and cloud computing have made it extremely popular and useful. ?Crowdsourcing? has become a buzzword after Jeff Howe?s article published in 2006 in Wired magazine.
There are many definitions of crowdsourcing. I am going to use the one that provides two major features differentiating it from other types of businesses:
A crowdsourced project is performed by outsiders (not employed by the client?s company).
The client uses an open call to choose a provider or to get the final product.
Crowdsoucing projects can be paid as well as performed by volunteers.
Most of the readers of this blog probably are familiar with one side of crowdsourscing, as service providers on websites like Elance, Guru, oDesk and Freelancer.
Today, though, I want to talk about writers as customers.
I divide crowdsourcing in four categories.
1. Distributed Knowledge
This includes resources where you can get information or advice for your article. They include, but are not limited to:
Wikipedia and its projects (Wikisource, Wikiquote). I really like the last one. It doesn?t only provide quotes from famous people but also points out ?misquotations?. I use it to find inspiration and to spice up my articles with fun or controversial remarks.
Quora.com and Yahoo Answers, networks where you can ask questions on specific topics.
Digital libraries. The most famous is Project Gutenberg, but Wikipedia has a huge list of similar websites. All of them are free to use.
Translation networks. If you need information from a foreign website or an article, there are services and volunteer networks which can help you with that. Check Akuna or Lingotek, for example.
Lawpivot.com is a network of attorneys. You can ask professionals on the forum or directly for their opinion on the topic of your article.
CouchSurfing.org is a huge international network of enthusiasts providing free hosting and local help for tourists. I believe it is one of the best sources of ?insider? information about happenings and ?hidden treasures? in any destination. If you are a travel writer, join the network and ask questions on its forums or connect with specific people. They will be happy to show you around.
Review websites: Trip Adviser, Yelp and Glass Door. The last one can be used before you approach a potential business customer to find out about the company?s weaknesses and to offer a solution. The recipient will be impressed by your in-depth awareness of the situation.
Help a Reporter is a place to look for free help, if you are writing an article for a newspaper or magazine. Their newsletter is distributed daily to more than 130,000 people. Post a query with a description of your needs and there is a good chance somebody would contact you with information about your topic.
2. Crowd Labor
Here you?ll find hundreds of freelance websites like Freelancer, Elance, vWorker, Amazon Mechanical Turk, etc. You probably have used gigs section of Craigslist, which also can be considered as crowdsourcing.
Many people believe that using Craigslist is the cheapest way to get anything done. I?d like to challenge this opinion and tell you about my favorite website, Fiverr.com. Its idea is very simple: everything costs $5. It has millions of users and tens of thousands of providers.
A buyer can choose a particular provider or to post the job on the gigs board. Here is the list of the projects I have ordered on Fiverr (and got them done each just for five bucks!): book covers for two e-books, book formatting, research about online privacy laws in Europe and Asia, article distribution, marketing on Twitter and Facebook, voice over for my book trail. Nine out of ten times the quality of the service was really impressive.
There are tens of Fiverr copycats (just search in Google ?Fiverr alternatives?). Some of them offer gigs starting from $1. The same time I?ve seen many gigs offered for $10 or $15 that can easily be ordered on Fiverr for $5.
3. Crowdfunding
Crowdfunding is the fastest growing trend in crowdsourcing. More than one billion dollars has been raised by hundreds of platforms like Kickstarter, Indiegogo or RocketHub. There are lots of niche websites for musicians, video and game producers and community projects.
Unfortunately, writers don?t have many websites dedicated to raising money for their craft. The one I am aware of is British and is called Unbound. But it has a specific model: the projects successfully funded are published in-house.
At the same time, publishing/writing categories on general platforms are also very popular. In my opinion, the best bet for non-fiction writers would be Indiegogo www.indiegogo.com. Right now there are almost eight hundred writing projects posted there. Here are examples of campaigns created by small form authors:
Manual for roller derby (at the time this post was written the author has raised $1,275).
Send a young writer from Pennsylvania to a week long writers retreat in California ($2,077).
Dorothy Surrenders asks for funds to to update her blog and buy a new laptop ($7,145).
For most of the readers of this blog it isn?t worth the effort unless you?re working on a book. But crowdfunding is a new craze and it would be smart to use it if you can.
Several months ago, President Obama signed JOBS Act opening doors for using crowdfunding by small businesses. Now it?s your turn to contact local companies that can be interested in pursuing this road or even looking through the list of businesses from your state to offer your content writing services for crowdfunding applications.
This is very time consuming process for many business owners (description of the campaign, updates several times a week, communication with hundreds/sometimes thousands of potential supporters, posting information in social media and on the company website). It?s a great opportunity for writers to get involved and to solve the problem.
4. Social Media and Forums.
This is a huge topic that deserves a separate post. But here are some ideas.
Use Facebook and Twitter to find hot topics and potential customers as well as to create polls and surveys.
Research Klout to find influencers on the topics you want to write about and look through the lists of their followers. You can find experts to conduct interviews with and clients interested in the niche.
I?d like to specifically point out the value of LinkedIn. Besides being the largest and most efficient social network for professionals, it lets you join up to fifty groups. Use it to participate in forums, gather information and make valuable contacts. More than half of my interviews and customers come from LinkedIn groups.
Monitor video sharing sites (YouTube, SlideShare, Vimeo, Ustream, etc.) for hot topics. Video is the new magazine, so you?d better learn how to communicate efficiently through visual work.
Image sharing networks are great for gathering ideas and illustrations. Freephoto, 123rf, Sxc.hu, Unprofound, and Dreamstime offer free images for your content. Flickr and iStockPhoto have the largest number of contributors, so you can find an illustration on any subject there.
Writers? forums on websites for freelancers, blogs, Amazon and Smashwords groups, writers? and journalists? organizations and industry magazines can be a huge source of information and support. Some of my favorite forums are Content and Article Writers and the Freelance Writers Den.
Copywriters can find potential partners and clients on Zooppa, ?the world?s largest source of user-generated advertising.
New content is written by crowds; it must be interactive, engaging, visual and short.
You?ll benefit tremendously from employing the power of social media, crowd labor and knowledge sharing networks for your business.
But don?t be just a consumer: participate, add value by sharing your expertise, and it will enhance your life beyond monetary rewards.
Elena Mikhaylova started her career as a journalist and PR pro almost 20 years ago. Her articles have been published in five countries. Now she?s a freelancer writing about technology, cyber security, social media marketing and internet business. VMware has reported a slight drop in third fiscal quarter 2012 income despite enjoying record revenue for the quarter.
At the same time, the cloud and virtualisation technology leader expects continued growth to come thanks to a couple of key acquisitions that it expects to help it be a leader in the development of software-defined data centers going forward.
VMware reported revenue for the third quarter of $US1.13 billion, up 20 percent from the $US942 million it reported for its third fiscal 2011 quarter.
Net income for the third quarter was $US157 million, compared to $US178 million for the third quarter of 2011
Revenue from license sales hit $US491 million for the quarter, up about 11 percent over last year, while services revenue rose about 29 percent during the same period to $US643 million.
Carl Eschenbach, chief operating officer and co-president of VMware, said a big feature of the third quarter was the $US1.2 billion VMware invested in acquiring software-defined networking (SDN) startup Nicira and its acquisition of DynamicOps, a developer of management software for provisioning apps and services across heterogeneous cloud infrastructures.
The idea of the software-defined data centre has emerged as the clear winner in terms of data center development going forward, Eschenbach said.
"The excitement around Nicira validates our approach to the software-defined data centre," he said.
For VMware, that spells growing strength for its vCloud Suite of software for building and managing a complete cloud infrastructure, as well as its Cloud Operations Services for helping customers transform their IT infrastructures into cloud infrastructures, Eschenbach said.
"The response to vCloud Suite and Cloud Ops from both partners and customers has been encouraging," he said.
VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger said vCloud Suite is VMware's first implementation of the Nicira SDN technology, giving his company a big opportunity to expand its reach into customers' public, private and hybrid clouds.
"We are the company customers increasingly turn to for help for transforming their IT to the cloud," Gelsinger said.
New CFO, nicked from Microsoft
VMware also used the release of its third quarter 2012 financial results to unveil the hiring of Jonathan Chadwick as its new CFO. Chadwick, who will officially take the CFO spot on November 5, most recently served as corporate vice president of arch-rival Microsoft and CFO of Skype, which Microsoft acquired.
Chadwick will replace Mark Peek, VMware's former CFO, who left the company in June.
Chadwick brings a wealth of financial experience to virtualisation and cloud software developer VMware, including a stint at arch-rival Microsoft, where he most recently served as corporate vice president of Microsoft and CFO of Skype.
Prior to Microsoft, Chadwick was executive vice president and CFO at McAfee, and served a few different financial roles at Cisco Systems.
At VMware, Chadwick will report directly to CEO Pat Gelsinger, who in July took over that role from former CEO Paul Maritz.
Looking behind to vRAM, ahead to 2013
VMware's Eschenbach said VMware's ending of its short-lived vRAM licensing scheme and returning to its previous CPU-based licensing model was welcomed by both channel partners and customers.
Channel partners said the reinstatement of the CPU-based licensing model removed a big sales barrier in the third and fourth quarters of 2012, while customers prefer the CPU-based model because of the simplification versus the vRAM model, he said.
When asked about the potential threat to VMware by the expected release of System Centre 2012 by rival Microsoft, Eschenbach dismissed any concerns by saying that it has yet to reach the market and that the global economic environment is the main factor going forward.
"While Microsoft is coming to market with a new platform, it should be called out that this is the third time in seven years that Microsoft has come to market with a 'good enough' product," he said.
Looking forward, Eschenbach expects VMware's fourth quarter 2012 revenue of between $US1.26 billion and $US1.29 billion, or up between 19 percent and 22 percent over the fourth quarter of 2011. That includes a 14 percent to 18 percent rise in license revenue to between $US587 million and $US605 million.
For all of 2012, VMware is maintaining the midpoint of its previous guidance by calling for total revenue of $US4.57 billion to $4.6 billion, or up between 21.4 percent and 22.2 percent over 2011, Eschenbach said. Licensing revenue for 2012 is expected to be up from 12.8 percent to 13.8 percent over 2011 because of a seasonably strong fourth quarter, he said.
(ASX: MTA) is set to hit the boards of the ASX next Monday 29 October 2012 following a successful IPO, which was managed by CPS Securities, offering 15 million shares at A$0.20 to raise $3 million.
The company has established a foothold in Africa with its acquisition of Mauritius-based Rio Mazowe, which holds the mining rights to a tenement package located in the Tete Province in central west Mozambique.
The tenements make up the Rio Mazoe Base Metal Project, which is managed by Rio Mazowe?s 90% owned subsidiary Afriminas Minerais.
As part of the acquisition, plans to acquire the remaining 10% of the shareholding in Afriminas to give it 100% ownership of the Rio Mazoe Project.
The central western Tete province is developing into one of the world's major sources of coking coal, with significant mining investment being channelled into the region.
Mining heavyweight (ASX: RIO) last year handed over $4 billion to acquire Riversdale Mining and gain exposure to the region's coal endowment.
The project comprises eight exploration licences considered highly prospective for Broken Hill Type (BHT) mineralisation.
It has a geological and tectonic setting that is considered analogous to terrane where BHT base metal ore deposits have been discovered in other parts of the world.
Economic BHT deposits often comprise large tonnage world class ore bodies, including the type deposit at Broken Hill (Australia) and the well documented deposits at Cannington (Australia), Aggeneys-Gamsberg (South Africa) and Zinkgruvan (Sweden).
Two target areas already identified ? the Meque (Rio Mazoe Norte) and Cocodeza Prospects, both of which exhibit anomalous base metal values in the regolith.
In particular the Cocodeza Prospect has coincident multiple geophysical anomalies consistent with base metal mineralisation at depth and represents a priority drill ready target.

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - A South African film production designer armed with a nail cutter is trying to help stamp out rhino poaching by sending toenail clippings to the Chinese embassy in Pretoria.
Mark Wilby said he wants to make the point that rhino horn, which sells for prices higher than gold as a traditional Chinese medicine, is made up of keratin - a protein which is a component in human nails and hair.
"I felt that we have moved beyond the time of politeness. I am not doing it out of disrespect to the Chinese authorities, but how else do you get their attention," Wilby told Reuters on Wednesday.
Wilby has produced a video released on YouTube, calling on others to clip their nails and send them by post to the embassy.
Chinese embassy officials were not immediately available for comment. Officials from China and South Africa have been working together to reduce poaching.
Rhino poaching deaths in South Africa, home to almost all the rhinos in Africa, hit a record annual high in October, driven by the use of horns in Chinese medicine and a spreading belief in Southeast Asia, unfounded in science, that they may cure cancer.
The number of rhinoceroses dying unnatural deaths in South Africa, either through illegal poaching or legal hunts, has now reached a level likely to lead to population decline, according to an expert study.
