Gay marriages resume in California after five-year hiatus

By Dan Levine

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Same-sex couples - some in shorts and jeans, some in their work clothes - rushed to be wed in California on Friday after a court abruptly ended the state's five-year ban on gay marriage in the wake of landmark rulings at the Supreme Court.

On a balcony overlooking the grand staircase at San Francisco City Hall, an ornate space that has long been a magnet for weddings, the couple whose case sparked this week's Supreme Court decision exchanged vows. The ceremony was officiated by state Attorney General Kamala Harris, and the ring bearer was the couple's 18-year-old son.

"This is the first day of the rest of our lives together, said Kristin Perry, who with her fianc?e, Sandy Stier, filed the lawsuit against Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that outlawed same-sex marriage in California in 2008.

Stier turned to the horde of reporters and well-wishers crowding the room, smiled and said: "Thank you so much for coming to our wedding."

At the city clerk's office, other couples waited for their marriage licenses. Two men - one in jeans and the other wearing a pair of shorts - exchanged vows after Stier and Perry.

Four hundred miles to the south, Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo, a second couple who were plaintiffs in the case, wed at City Hall in Los Angeles.

"You are just as in love today as you were when you met 12 years ago," Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who conducted the ceremony, told the two men, who wore suits with boutonnieres.

The California marriages capped a historic week for gay rights in the United States. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court issued two key rulings - one that extended federal benefits to married gay couples and another that allowed a federal court's order striking down the California marriage ban to stand.

TAKEN BY SURPRISE

On Friday, a panel of three federal appellate court judges responded by formally lifting an injunction against the marriages. That move took brides, grooms and public officials by surprise. They had expected the judges to wait for a more formal ruling from the Supreme Court due in about three weeks.

Within minutes, couples were descending upon San Francisco City Hall, and California Governor Jerry Brown had ordered county clerks throughout the state to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Cassie Coleman and Rosa Sanchez were at work when the ruling came down. They agreed via text message to meet at City Hall, and called their mothers to ask permission. They got some roses - red and pink.

"That was it," Sanchez said. "We just jumped in."

The impromptu weddings and the jubilant participation by public officials prompted angry responses from some opponents of gay marriage.

"This outrage tops off a chronic pattern of lawlessness, throughout this case, by judges and politicians hell-bent on thwarting the vote of the people to redefine marriage by any means, even outright corruption," said Andy Pugno, general counsel for the ProtectMarriage.com Coalition.

But he did not, however, actively threaten to fight on.

"It remains to be seen whether the fight can go on, but either way, it's a disgraceful day for California," he said.

John Eastman, a constitutional law professor at Chapman University who was a key backer of the ban, said the appellate court judges should have waited for a 25-day "reconsideration" period to elapse, in which opponents would have had one last chance to ask the Supreme Court to change its mind.

California briefly allowed gay marriages in 2008, before the ballot initiative was enacted. It now becomes the 13th state, and the largest, to allow same-sex marriage - just in time, advocates point out, for Gay Pride weekend.

"On my way to S.F. City Hall," tweeted Harris minutes after the injunction was lifted. "Let the wedding bells ring!"

Scientists produce Star Trek-like deflector device for cancer-free ...

A mini magnetosphere could protect spacecraft from Solar radiation and galactic cosmic rays

Scientists at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK are working on a Star Trek-like deflector shield to enable the transport of humans between planets and stars without subjecting them to lethal doses of cosmic radiation.?This research comes at a vital time, as numerous groups, including NASA, look to send humans to Mars ? but without adequate shielding from the Sun?s harsh cosmic rays, it could be a one-way trip full of vomiting, diarrhea, and more serious symptoms of radiation poisoning, such as death.

Other than time and money, one of the biggest barriers to sending humans to other planets is Solar radiation (from flares and coronal ejections) and galactic cosmic rays. The exact origin of GCRs is unknown, but it?s theorized that they originate in supernovae and the dense nuclei of other galaxies. In any case, both forms of radiation consist of high-energy protons that bombard every square inch of the Solar System, including Earth. Being hit by a high-energy proton is bad news, and if you get hit by enough you will develop radiation sickness, your tissues will degenerate, and you might develop cancer.

Fortunately, here on Earth you?re protected from Solar radiation and GCRs by a number of awesome effects. The Earth?s atmosphere absorbs most Solar radiation. The Earth?s magnetic field deflects all but the most powerful GCRs. There?s also an interplanetary magnetic field, produced by the Sun, which deflects GCRs at the edge of the Solar System (the heliopause; the region of space that Voyager-1 recently traversed). As a result, we receive very little radiation from space here on Earth ? about 0.4 milli-Sieverts (mSv) per year. Astronauts aboard the Apollo missions, though, which traveled far away from Earth?s atmosphere and magnetic field, received on the order of 1.2 mSv per day, or 1100 times more radiation than those of us down on Earth.

XKCD's radiation dose chart.

XKCD?s radiation dose chart. Click to zoom in.

As we know from XKCD?s amazing Radiation Dose Chart (pictured above), we know that a dosage of around 100 mSv in a single year increases your chance of developing cancer. It?s estimated that a trip to Mars could expose the astronauts to as much as 1,000 mSv (1Sv) or more. Solar radiation and GCRs are unlikely to cause acute radiation poisoning ? you need a bigger dose in a shorter period ? but unless you want everyone to develop cancer, or spend the entire trip vomiting and ejecting liquid poop, spacecraft will need adequate radiation shielding.

Which leads us neatly onto the?Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK, which has devised a ?mini magnetosphere? that essentially recreates the protection provided by the Earth?s magnetic field. The scientists have so far used the magnetosphere to protect a scale spacecraft from radiation (pictured right, in a plasma stream), and they?re now working on a concept spacecraft,?called Discovery, with a full-scale magnetosphere that could theoretically take humans to Mars.

Scale model of the mini magnetosphere, protecting a spacecraft from radiation

The advantage of the magnetosphere method is that it?s significantly lighter than conventional radiation shielding, which usually consists of thick metal plates. Other viable methods have popped up in recent months, though. Most notably, Inspiration Mars, which will send two humans to Mars in 2018, will employ a radiation shield fashioned out of food, water, and poop stored against the hull of the spacecraft.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Derrick Villard prepares for Military Bowl

Quarterback Tim Boyle fakes a hand-off to Cromwell running back Derrick Villard Jr. during practice at Xavier Thursday evening. Villard and Boyle are members of Team National Guard and will play in the Connecticut Military Bowl Saturday at 4:30 at Rentschler Field in East Hartford Photo by Catherine Avalone/The Middletown Press

MIDDLETOWN >> Despite averaging nearly 11 yards per carry and smashing career and single season school records for rushing yards, Cromwell?s Derrick Villard didn?t get many Division I scholarship offers. That?s sort of the deal when you play in the Pequot Conference.

So Villard will be playing football and taking AP courses as a post-graduate student at Trinity-Pawling (N.Y.) in September.

?I got some (Division I) looks during the season,? said Villard, who averaged 239.3 yards per game for the Panthers last fall. ?I really want to play at the next level. That?s the main reason for me going there.?

Before heading to New York, Villard will get another chance to showcase his abilities today in the inaugural Hall of Fame Classic Military Bowl at Rentschler Field. Kick-off is at 4:30 p.m.

Connecticut?s newest senior all-star football game pits the National Guard team versus the Marines team and National Guard head coach Jim Buonocore (Ledyard) is happy to have Villard on his side.

?(Derrick) stood out from the beginning at the combine in March,? said Buonocore. ?We identified him as one of the top backs there that day. We were very fortunate to be able to select him in the draft and he?s been doing a good job.?

Villard (6-1, 205) will be sharing the tailback duties with Justin Potts (Platt) and John Shannon (Bullard-Havens). The National Guard backfield also includes quarterbacks Tim Boyle (Xavier) and Mike Nicol (Wolcott), and fullback Austin Kingsbury (Windsor Locks).

?It?s fun and I like the atmosphere with all the players on the team,? Villard said. ?They have a different outlook on football in general. It?s a lot more competitive. Coming from my school our linemen are not as big as some of these kids. I think we have one kid who weighs 305 on this team, so there?s a big difference.?

Cromwell football coach Chris Eckert is one of Buonocore?s assistant coaches.

?It?s a unique opportunity for Derrick to be playing in the first game in this format,? said Eckert, who guided the Panthers to an 8-2 mark last season. ?I think it?s neat that he was recognized as one of the Top 100 players in Connecticut. The game is going to be a great experience for him. It will be something he?ll never forget.? Continued...

As a junior, Villard gained 2,125 yards and scored 27 rushing touchdowns while leading Cromwell to the Class S state championship game. His sensational 72-yard TD run helped Cromwell rally from a 13-0 deficit against Northwest Catholic in the Class S semifinals and propelled the Panthers to a 35-19 win.

Villard then gained 161 yards on 28 carries and scored three touchdowns against Holy Cross of Waterbury in the Class S finals. The Panthers, however, fell short 34-27 in a classic at Rentschler Field.

Villard?s senior year was equally impressive. He set a school record for most yards in a season with 2,393, surpassing 5,000 for his career, also a school record. Villard scored 22 touchdowns and was named to the New Haven Register?s All-State Third Team.

?He was our work horse,? said Eckert. ?A lot of times the staff and I said, ?let?s just put the ball in his hands and see what happens.? He definitely carried us. He?s going to be greatly missed.?

Added Buonocore, ?He?s a big, physical kid?a little bigger than I had thought in terms of what he looks like when the pads go on. He?s a hard worker. He?s picking up the offense. I think he?s going to have a big say in our success on Saturday.?

Watchdog warns of waste in Afghan aircraft buy

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Pentagon is spending more than three-quarters of a billion dollars to buy Russian-made helicopters and other aircraft for an Afghan aviation unit that lacks the troops and expertise to operate and maintain the equipment, a government watchdog warned.

The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction said in a report Friday these shortcomings mean the helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft destined for the Afghan Special Mission Wing "could be left sitting on runways in Afghanistan, rather than supporting critical missions, resulting in waste of U.S. funds." The report recommended putting the purchases on hold until the Afghans develop the capacity to support the aircraft.

The findings are sure to reverberate on Capitol Hill, where there is stiff opposition to the purchase of the Mi-17 helicopters from Rosoboronexport, the state-run Russian arms exporter that is a top weapons supplier to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The Pentagon announced June 17 that Rosoboronexport had been awarded a $554 million contract for 30 Mi-17s to be used by the Special Mission Wing, a move that came just days after the House approved a 2014 defense policy bill that included a prohibition on contracts with the Russian agency. The Senate Armed Services Committee included a similar ban in its version of the bill.

The defense policy bill for 2013 also barred the Pentagon from using funds from that fiscal year for contracts with Rosoboronexport. But the Pentagon said money from the 2012 fiscal year was being used for the Mi-17 acquisition, so the restriction does not apply.

A Defense Department spokesman said there was an "urgent, near-term need" to buy the wing the Mi-17s, a multimission aircraft designed to operate at high altitudes and uniquely suited for the wing.

"Careful consideration of all the information available to the department confirms that it would be in the public interest to procure the Mi-17s needed for the (wing) from Rosoboronexport," Army Lt. Col. Jim Gregory said in a statement.

In addition to the Mi-17s, the Pentagon is spending $218 million on 18 PC-12 cargo aircraft from the Sierra Nevada Corp. of Sparks, Nev., to allow the Special Mission Wing to perform counterterrorism and counternarcotics missions, the report said.

The special inspector general is recommending the purchase be suspended until the wing's staffing, recruiting and training problems are resolved. Chief among them is finalizing a memorandum of understanding between the Afghan interior and defense ministries that would give the military control of the wing. But the document remains unsigned due largely to the interior ministry's "resistance to surrendering authority" over the wing, according to the report.

Michael Dumont, the deputy assistant defense secretary for Afghanistan, Pakistan and Central Asia, said in comments included in the report that delaying the purchase of the aircraft until the agreement was signed "would unacceptably delay our efforts to develop the (wing) into a capable force."

The wing was to have 806 personnel by mid-2015, but as of late January had just 180, according to the report.

Filling out the wing's ranks won't be easy, the report said, due to challenges of finding Afghan recruits who are literate in their own language, competent in English and can pass the strict, 18- to 20-month U.S. vetting process that includes eliminating candidates who have ties to criminal or insurgent activities.

The flow of Afghan trainees from helicopter flight training at Fort Rucker, Ala., to more intense training in the Czech Republic "has been slow and uneven, ranging from a low of two up to eight trainees at a time," according to the special inspector general.

The report blamed a lack of steady funding for the training from the Defense Department, failed background checks for prospective pilots and flight engineers, and the Czech government's requirement that each Afghan trainee have a certificate signed by Afghan authorities.

Compensation, especially for mechanics, is another barrier to recruitment because Afghans with a basic command of English are in high demand and can get higher pay elsewhere, the report said.

Another key shortcoming is the dearth of pilots capable of flying at night, when most counterterrorism missions are conducted. As of late January, only seven of the 47 pilots assigned to the wing were fully mission qualified to fly with night vision goggles, the report said.

Iranian official signals no early scaling back in nuclear work

By Alissa de Carbonnel

ST PETERSBURG, Russia (Reuters) - Iran will press ahead with its uranium enrichment program, its nuclear energy chief said on Friday, signaling no immediate change of course despite the victory of a relative moderate in the June 14 presidential election.

But once Hassan Rouhani takes office in early August, Tehran's current hardline team in nuclear talks with six world powers, led by Saeed Jalili who was a rival election candidate, is likely to be overhauled. Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani's tenure as head of Iran's atomic energy agency may be in jeopardy as well.

Speaking in Russia, Abbasi-Davani said that production of nuclear fuel would "continue in line with our declared goals. The enrichment linked to fuel production will also not change".

Speaking through an interpreter to reporters at a nuclear energy conference in St Petersburg, he said work at Iran's underground Fordow plant - which the West wants Iran to close - would also continue. Iran refines uranium at Fordow to a level that is relatively close to the threshold needed for atom bombs.

Iran says it is enriching uranium only to fuel a planned network of nuclear power stations, and for medical purposes.

But refined uranium also provides the fissile material for nuclear bombs if processed further, which the West fears may be Tehran's ultimate goal given that Tehran has a history of hiding some nuclear activity from U.N. anti-proliferation inspectors.

Abbasi-Davani said Iran's only existing nuclear power plant - which has suffered repeated delays - had been "brought back online" three days ago and was working at 1,000-megawatt capacity. A U.N. nuclear agency report said in May that the Russian-built Bushehr plant was shut down, giving no reason.

"Thankfully in the last days, no concrete defects with the plant have been reported to me," Abbasi-Davani said.

Hopes for a resolution to the nuclear dispute were boosted this month with the election as president of Rouhani, who has promised a more conciliatory approach to foreign relations than confrontational predecessor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

NO FORDOW CLOSURE

As chief nuclear negotiator under reformist President Mohammed Khatami from 2003 to 2005, Rouhani struck a deal with European Union powers under which Iran temporarily suspended uranium enrichment-related activities. They were resumed after Ahmadinejad was elected in 2005 and have been sharply expanded.

Jalili, the current chief negotiator, has espoused a "no compromises" stance that was derided even by other conservatives in the election campaign for failing to yield any progress in talks, triggering ever more punishing sanctions against Iran.

Asked whether there would be any change in Iranian policy after Rouhani's election and whether it could suspend 20 percent enrichment, Abbasi-Davani said Iran's nuclear program was aimed at producing electricity and medical isotopes only.

"In line with these two goals of course the production of energy will not stop," he said. Fordow is under the monitoring of the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency, he said. "We will of course continue our work at this centre."

Iran's theocratic supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said on Wednesday the nuclear stand-off could easily be resolved if the West were to stop being so stubborn.

While accusing the West of being more interested in regime change than ending the dispute, Khamenei did express a desire to resolve an issue which has led to ever tighter and more damaging sanctions on Iran's oil sector and the wider economy.

But analysts say it remains uncertain whether Iran with Rohani as president will be more amenable to the demands of world powers that it halt its most sensitive enrichment, to a fissile concentration of 20 percent, and stop work at Fordow.

The hardline Khamenei wields ultimate control over Iranian nuclear policy, although the president has important influence.

Abbasi-Davani also said Iran would soon give to the Vienna-based IAEA a list of planned nuclear reactor sites. He spoke in front of a model of the Bushehr reactor at the Islamic state's stand at the nuclear industry fair in St Petersburg.

Contrary to popular belief, crabgrass does not thrive in lawns, gardens and farm fields by simply crowding out other plants. A new study in ACS' Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry has found that the much-despised weed actually produces its own herbicides that kill nearby plants.

Chui-Hua Kong and colleagues point out that crabgrass is not only a headache for lawns and home gardens, but also a major cause of crop loss on farms. Scientists long suspected, but had a hard time proving, that the weed thrived by allelopathy. From the Greek "allelo-," meaning "other," and "-pathy," meaning "suffering," allelopathy occurs when one plant restricts the growth of another by releasing toxins. They set out to determine if crabgrass has this oppressive ability.

Kong's team isolated three chemicals from crabgrass that affect the microbial communities in nearby soil and did indeed inhibit the growth of staple crops wheat, corn and soybeans. "The chemical-specific changes in [the] soil microbial community generated a negative feedback on crop growth," the scientists said, noting that the chemicals also would have a direct toxic effect on other plants.

Emmys: 'Boardwalk Empire' Gets Those Gorgeous Costumes Bloody

(Please note strong language in paragraph seven)

By Tim Molloy

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Two of the stars of "Boardwalk Empire," Jack Huston and Michael K. Williams, sat recently on one of the show's exquisite nightclub sets, talking about how few scenes they have together.

Which may be for the best.

Huston plays Richard Harrow, a hired gun whose disturbing half-mask hides not just his war injuries but also his innate decency. Williams plays Chalky White, the head of Atlantic City's African-American rackets, who commits crimes for the betterment of his family.

They can't be on screen together very often, Williams explained to TheWrap, because too many people would die. "When you see Chalky or Harrow, you know that something's going to go down," said Williams. "You don't want to be in a scene with them. You know they're going to start making multiples of your wardrobe."

Making multiples? Williams, an expert in rendering his co-stars unemployed given his role on "The Wire" as stickup man Omar Little, explained why actors don't want to hear that phrase. "When you get multiples, you're gonna die," he said. "When they shoot over and over, they get blood on the clothes, and they have to do it again ... When you see multiples of your wardrobe, it's usually when Harrow or Chalky's in the room."

On the season finale of Boardwalk's third and best season, Harrow single-handedly took out a bordello full of gangsters, even as White joined in a brutal standoff to put down a gangster uprising. Many multiples were made. But the build-up to that bloodshed was long. The show metes out violence as strategically as a speakeasy would its best whiskey. When it arrives, not everyone is left standing.

"In the last episode it was like all-out f---ing war," said Huston, looking fresh-faced without his Harrow mask and glasses. "And I had such an itchy trigger finger. Last season it was Episode 10, and I said to Tim Van Patten, ?Man, I haven't killed someone in a long time. What's going on?'"

In lulls between all the death, "Boardwalk Empire," like Huston, wears a half-mask of gentility, providing lilting accents, elegant parlor rooms, champagne flutes filled with promise and the most ornate costumes this side of "Downton Abbey." Then, just as we're lulled into some sense of tranquility - what a lovely period drama we're watching! -someone gets set on fire. Or sent home in a shipping crate.

The show's subdued moments sometimes feel like an attempt to make the violence all the more jolting. But showrunner Terence Winter has noted that many viewers prefer those moments, which offer political intrigue, family drama and some of the best music on television.

"We have people who can't stand the violence, and they're much more entertained by the family stuff," he told TheWrap last year. "One person's slow is another person's fascinating."

The sheer beauty of "Boardwalk" means few people complain when it takes time to let us admire the sights. In its first two seasons it was nominated for 30 Emmys and won 12 - for cinematography, art direction and special visual effects, among other categories. It also has won directing Emmys for Martin Scorsese and Van Patten, who are among the show's executive producers.

But if there is any justice - and Boardwalk's storylines make the case that there may not be - this could be the year "Boardwalk" finally wins a lead-actor Emmy for Steve Buscemi for his role as Enoch "Nucky" Thompson or Emmy recognition as television's best drama. (In 2011, it won Golden Globes in both categories.)

Like many shows before it, including "The Wire," "Boardwalk" hit its stride in its third season. All of its characters' ambitions and fears came crashing ashore at once, resulting in the show's most magnificently crafted stories - and one perfectly placed set piece after another.

Gillian Darmody (Gretchen Mol) drowned a poor bastard who looked like her dead son, Jimmy (Michael Pitt). We saw a horrific, beautiful final vision of Nucky's bobbed paramour, Billie Kent (Meg Steedle). And we shared the devastation of Margaret Schroeder (Kelly Macdonald) as her lover arrived home, broken and bent into a box.

Because "Boardwalk" took the time to earn each moment, the imagery served the show's deft storytelling more than ever before. It was an especially impressive accomplishment given that many critics wondered where the show could possibly go after the death of one of its leads, Pitt, in its second season. That shocking departure came about when Nucky was forced to kill Jimmy, his former prot?g?, when he tried, as people always do, to usurp Nucky's power.

"I think he does have a generous streak to him," Buscemi told TheWrap. "He sort of responds to the way people treat him. What's that saying: ?Don't mistake my kindness for weakness?'"

At its most basic level, the show is about people trying to slake the thirst created by Prohibition. Outlawing alcohol in 1920 fueled criminal empires from Nucky's Atlantic City to Chicago, where Al Capone (Stephen Graham) was just discovering his special talents with a lead pipe.

But the liquor trade also opened up opportunities to countless Americans who might otherwise have been shut out. It meant work for Harrow, whose deformity likely would have kept him out of an office. Gillian, a child showgirl whose rape at 13 brought Jimmy into the world, rose to the relatively prestigious position of madame.

White became a dapper crime boss and essential ally to Nucky, even as other African-Americans of his time had to take what work they could get.

Critics of capitalism may see the liquor business as a metaphor for all American enterprise. As outsiders scratch their way in, they discover a world every bit as dirty as the one they've escaped. Winter, meanwhile, says the show's look at the 1920s is echoed in the current debate over drug legalization. But he doesn't believe the show needs to make a case for legalizing drugs: "I think history made it for us with Prohibition."

The show leaves it to viewers to make moral judgments, as it focuses instead on the often-noble motivations of the criminal class. Gillian, for example, uses her position to teach her girls about art and literature - until mobsters take over their house, and Harrow has no choice but to shoot the place up. He does it to save Jimmy's son, and in the process helps Nucky win back power from Gyp Rosetti (Bobby Cannavale).

With Rosetti dead, the show will go in another direction in its fourth season, premiering this fall. The war with Rosetti cost Nucky his power and prestige, but he finally knows who his friends are, including his once-estranged brother Eli (Shea Whigham). The latest attempt to bring him down may mean the end of Nucky's days as a glad-handing politician.

"I think it's made him more introspective and a little less willing to put himself out there so publicly," Buscemi said. "He's been through a lot, and he just wants to recede a little bit. But he hasn't lost his appetite for wanting things and wanting a certain amount of power. That's still there."

Viewers of the show's Season 4 trailer know where Nucky turns: We see him meeting Valentine Narcisse (Jeffrey Wright), a "doctor of divinity" who controls Harlem. Narcisse has a passion for power that Boardwalk viewers may find familiar. "Only kings," he intones, "understand each other."

"Boardwalk" has never had trouble veering off in unexpected directions. That was apparent to Mol when she learned in the show's second season that her character - a grandmother at 37 - would have sex with her son in a flashback. The scene showed how damaged Gillian was by adulthood's sudden assault on her youth.

"I called Michael, and I was like, ?Oh, my God, how do we do this?' He said, ?I think we have to be really drunk.' And I was like, ?Us as the actors? Or the characters?'"

Of the show's writers, she added, "They can write anything. And you just have to be prepared to go there."

Chances are it won't be somewhere good. But that doesn't stop the actors from hoping for the best for their characters. Williams, for instance, would love for White to see the Civil Rights Movement. "My mom got to see a black president," he said. "So why couldn't Chalky get to see Martin Luther King? ?Chalky, I need you to round up the brothers and sisters, we're doing a peace march.'"

Buscemi's hope for Nucky is smaller scale.

"I'd like to see him have fun again," he said. "It's gotten darker as each season goes. He used to tell jokes, he used to laugh, he used to have friends. His world seems to be getting smaller and smaller as it gets bigger and bigger."

Congresswoman who shamed contractor: ?I stood up for veterans?

Rep. Tammy Duckworth, a Democratic congresswoman and disabled Iraq War vet, says her shaming of an IRS contractor claiming his decades-old football injury at a military prep school entitled his IT business to government contracts was done out of respect for all veterans.

"Yesterday, I stood up for our Veterans and taxpayers in a hearing on abuse of small business programs," Duckworth wrote on Twitter. She added on Facebook: "I hope you will join me."

The Illinois lawmaker lost her legs and the use of her right arm in Iraq in 2004 when the Blackhawk helicopter she was piloting was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. On Wednesday, she berated Braulio Castillo, the chief executive of Leesburg, Va.-based Strong Castle, during a House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform hearing on Capitol Hill.

Tammy Duckworth grills Braulio Castillo. (YouTube)

"Your foot hurt?" Duckworth asked Castillo.

"Yes ma'am," he replied.

"My feet hurt, too," Duckworth said. "In fact, the balls of my feet burn continuously and I feel like there's a nail being hammered into my heel right now. So I can understand pain and suffering and how service connection can cause unremitting, unyielding, unstoppable pain. So I'm sorry twisting your ankle in high school has now come back to hurt you in such a painful way, and also opportune for you to gain this status for your business."

Castillo, whose friendship with a top IRS official has come under House scrutiny, says he broke his foot at the U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School in 1984.

According to its website, Strong Castle is "a Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) Center for Veteran Enterprise (CVE) verified Service-Disabled, Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB), and a Commonwealth of Virginia Small, Women, and Minority (SWaM) certified Minority-Owned Small Business." In May, the company was a runner-up for the Veterans Affairs Award at a local business awards event.

During the hearing, Duckworth read aloud a letter Castillo had sent to Veterans Affairs seeking set-aside contract status. It read in part: "These are crosses that I bear due to my service to our great country and I would do it again to protect this great country.?

?I?m so glad that you would be willing to play football in prep school again to protect this great country,? Duckworth told Castillo. ?Shame on you, Mr. Castillo. Shame on you. You may not have broken any laws, but you certainly broke the trust of this great nation. You broke the trust of veterans.

"Iraq and Afghanistan veterans right now are waiting an average of 237 days for an initial disability rating," she continued. "It is because people like you who are gaming the system are adding to that backlog that young men and women who are suffering from post-traumatic stress, who are missing limbs cannot get the compensation and the help that they need."

Emmys: Monica Potter's 'Parenthood' cancer battle began with her own real-life scare

By Jethro Nededog

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Monica Potter's journey through the experiences of a mom with cancer on NBC's "Parenthood" actually began with her own medical scare. "When I went in last year for a mammogram, my first one, they said they found something," Potter told TheWrap.

On the heels of the discovery, the 41-year-old mother of three went home and emailed executive producer Jason Katims, pitching a cancer storyline in the show's fourth season for her character Christina. "He emailed me back and said, ?I have the chills, because we just broke that in the writers room,'" she remembered. "We were able to go on the journey together." (For his part, Katims also had a personal connection to the subject - his wife is a breast cancer survivor who is more than two years cancer-free.)

Luckily, Potter's scare ended up with the diagnosis of a benign cyst and a clean bill of health. But instead of delving into research on the subject of cancer, Potter said she went into the season with very little preparation for a storyline that took her character through diagnosis, chemotherapy and then remission. "I didn't want to know anything about what goes on with breast cancer and the treatments for it, because I wanted to experience it with the character along the way."

That's actually very strange for the Cleveland-born actress, who considers herself very "Type A" when it comes to preparation and who has gotten ribbing from colleagues for her methods. "I'll take a script, I'll rip it apart, I'll highlight, I'll staple each scene.

Sometimes, we shoot two at the same time, so I'll put them in categories," she said. "This year, I decided that I wasn't going to do that. I wasn't going to sit there and pull the scripts apart, and I wasn't going to have to know everything."

Not only did viewers react favorably to Christina's battle with cancer, but critics did, too. Potter recently won a Critics Choice Television Award for the portrayal and is getting a lot of Emmy buzz as well.

"I'm so excited and I'm so thrilled," she said. "And it's cool, because my boys are older, and they've seen me work at this since I was in my early 20s." Her career began, she said, when Danny, who was born in 1990 and is the oldest of her three children, was about 3.

"We'd travel all over and live in hotels, and I'd work and try to get paid. And the Critics Choice was the first award I'd ever been nominated for. To me, that's the best part of it all, to see the kids and their excitement. It shows hard work and dedication and loving what you do can be celebrated. And it's kind of awesome."

Laser guided codes advance single pixel terahertz imaging

June 25, 2013 ? The universe is awash in terahertz (THz) waves, as harmless as they are abundant. But unlike other regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, THz has proven to be extremely difficult to manipulate in order to capture novel images of objects and materials with which these light waves interact.

Most existing THz imaging devices employ prohibitively expensive technology or require several hours and cumbersome manual controls in order to generate a viable image, according to Boston College Professor of Physics Willie J. Padilla.

Padilla and researchers in his lab recently reported a breakthrough in efforts to create accessible and effective THz imaging. Using both optical and electronic controls, the team developed a single-pixel imaging technique that uses a coded aperture to quickly and efficiently manipulate stubborn THz waves, according to a recent report in the journal Optics Express.

In the so-called terahertz gap, a region of wavelengths that falls between microwave and infrared frequencies, conventional electronic sensors and semiconductor devices are ineffective. Some systems capture only a fraction of a scene and the means to tune these THz waves are inefficient. This has fueled the search for new imaging technologies in order to manipulate THz waves.

Efforts to overcome the challenges of mechanics, cost and image clarity are viewed as a crucial step in efforts to tame the THz gap since imaging and sensing at this frequency holds the potential for advances in areas as divergent as chemical fingerprinting, security imaging of hidden weapons, even real-time skin imaging to promote simple detection of skin cancer.

Central to this challenge is the development of a technology to create efficient masks -- similar to the aperture of a camera -- capable of tuning THz radiation in order to produce clear images in just a few seconds.

Padilla and graduate students David Shrekenhamer and Claire M. Watts report their new single pixel imaging method centers on what they describe as a "coded aperture multiplex technique" where a laser beam and electronic signals are used to send a set of instructions to a semiconductor so it can guide the reproduction of the image of an object after THz waves have passed through it.

A digital micro-mirror device encodes the laser beam with instructions that direct certain segments of the silicon mask to react and allow a selected sample of the THz waves to pass freely through, consistent with the image pattern. The combination of optical instructions and the reaction of the semiconductor create a THz spatial light modulator, the team reports. Functioning like the aperture of a conventional camera, the modulator then guides the digital reconstruction of the entire image based on a broad sampling of THz waves that have passed through the object.

The team's experiments found the method could produce masks of varying resolutions, ranging from 63 to 1023 pixels and acquire images at speeds up to .5 Hz, or about 2 seconds. The early findings "demonstrate the viability of obtaining real-time and high-fidelity THz images using an optically controlled SLM with a single pixel detector," the team concluded.

Padilla said the findings have spurred additional research by his lab into ways to further control THz waves, such as by using the intricate patterns of an engineered metamaterial to further manipulate terahertz waves to create images faster and with increased efficiency.
