New, gentler snowstorm heads for Northeast
It won't be a blockbuster snowfall, but most of the big cities in the Northeast will get one to three inches of snow. The Weather Channel's Chris Warren reports.

A second, smaller winter storm will hit the Northeast Friday night and into Saturday, dumping up to 4 inches of snow in major cities and up to a foot and a half of snow in less populated areas. But it won?t pack nearly the punch of the one earlier this week that brought twisters, high winds, icy roads, power outages and record snowfall, and that led to at least 17 deaths and thousands of grounded flights, affecting tens of thousands of holiday travelers.
"This storm will move at a rather brisk pace, so we don't expect any overwhelming snow amounts," weather.com reported.
New York City can expect 2-4 inches Saturday morning and into the evening, NBCNewYork.com reported, calling it a "postcard" storm ideal for sledding and strolling.

Washington, D.C., is looking at 1-3 inches, NBCWashington.com was forecasting. Some of that snow is likely to mix with rain.
Freezing rain -- making for treacherous travel conditions -- was predicted for parts of Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia while significant rain was likely along the New Jersey, Virginia and Maryland coasts, the?National Weather Service?said.
The weather service forecast 12 to 18 inches of snow for northern New England, accompanied by freezing rain and sleet.
Tom Olney, a 50-year-old stay-at-home father of two, was making plans to go sledding with his children in their hometown of Wayland, Mass.?
"We love snow," Olney told Reuters. "What else are you going to do when it's this wet and cold out?"?
Western Massachusetts, like much of the Northeast, had an uncharacteristically mild winter last year, but residents such as Olney say they are ready for a more typical cold season.?
"Mother Nature doesn't usually give you two in a row," he said. "We've still got a lot of supplies from last year, so I guess we're ready for it now."?
Eleven inches of snow was forecast for Buffalo, N.Y., where some 8 to 12 inches of snow fell overnight into Thursday. Prior to that, Buffalo was 23 inches below average for this time of year, the weather service said.
"It's just a reminder: Winter is here," said Tom Paone of the National Weather Service in Buffalo.
The earlier winter storm was tied to at least 17 deaths and?forced the cancellation of thousands of airline flights. It?dumped record snow in north Texas and Arkansas before sweeping through the South on Christmas Day and then veering north, where the Adirondacks got 20 inches of snow.
More than 2,000 flights have been canceled, and more than 200,000 customers are without power in several Southern states as the impact of severe winter weather was felt across the nation. NBC's Eric Fisher reports.
It also triggered tornadoes and left almost 200,000 homes and businesses in Arkansas and Alabama lost power on Wednesday.
In Arkansas, 135,000 homes and businesses were still without power Friday morning, and the state's largest utility said many might not get it back until after Jan. 1. Freezing rain was expected Friday, making it harder for utility crews to repair lines.
Deena Brazell spent a night in her car for warmth, though she hadn't planned it that way.
"Everything in the apartment is electric. I stayed in the apartment the first night. After that, it got cold really quick," she told The Associated Press. "I went out to charge the phone and fell asleep, then I just decided to stay."?

Things may finally be looking up for US manufacturing, James Fallows argues in the December issue of The Atlantic.?
Even in its battered condition, the American manufacturing sector is still the largest in the world, but its share of the US economy has declined from 20 percent in the early 1980s to just over 10 percent today. In the process, many high-paying jobs moved to China and other lower-wage countries, while Rust Belt communities in the United States were hard hit.
Two trends are likely to get trade winds blowing toward America again, Mr. Fallows contends. First, new technologies emerging in the US, such as 3-D printing, make it easier and faster to design, build, and refine products. Three-dimensional printing allows firms to use computerized molding systems to produce prototypes in minutes or hours. ?A revolution is coming to the creation of things, comparable to the Internet?s effect on the creation and dissemination of ideas,? one industrial design expert told Fallows.
At the same time, tumultuous changes in China are reducing its manufacturing advantages, complicating life for outsourcers and exporters. ?In China, wages are rising, workers are becoming choosier, public resistance to environmental devastation is growing, and the Chinese ?investment led? model is showing strain,? Fallows says.?
Apple?s new CEO
Apple chief executive officer Tim Cook talked extensively about management and corporate creativity in an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek editor Josh Tyrangiel.
Mr. Cook succeeded Apple?s late co-founder Steve Jobs. Mr. Jobs was a major shareholder in the Walt Disney Company and had seen how executives there wasted time trying to figure out what Disney himself would have done after the founder of the company had passed away. Jobs ?removed a tremendous burden for me,? Cook says, by instructing, ?I never want you to ask what I would have done. Just do what is right.?
Apple has taken heat for poor working conditions at massive Foxconn Technology Group factories in China where many of its products are assembled. Cook told Businessweek that Apple would start producing one line of its Mac computers in the US in 2013 ? a modest sign of the brightening prospects for US manufacturing mentioned above.
Creativity, in Cook?s definition, is ?people who care enough to keep thinking about something until they find the simplest way to do it.? He laughed about corporate innovation departments saying that having one ?is always a sign that something is wrong ... you know, put a for sale sign on the door.?

South Africa's Mandela responding to treatment in hospital
JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Former South African president and anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela, who is 94, continues to respond to treatment two weeks after being taken to hospital, the government said on Saturday.
The Nobel Peace laureate, who has been treated for a lung infection and gallstones after being hospitalized on December 8, was visited by South African President Jacob Zuma, presidency spokesman Mac Maharaj said in a statement.
"Madiba has been in hospital since the 8th of December and continues to respond to treatment," Maharaj said, referring to Mandela by his clan name.
"President Zuma assured him of the love and support of all South Africans, young and old, and the whole world."
The country's first black president was admitted to hospital in Pretoria earlier this month after being flown from his home village of Qunu in a remote part of the Eastern Cape province.
It seems likely that Mandela, admired at home and abroad as a global icon against injustice for his lifetime of struggle against minority white rule, will end up spending Christmas in the hospital.
On Thursday, following his re-election as leader of the ruling African National Congress (ANC), Zuma reported Mandela had "steadily improved".
Zuma said then the former president was receiving "the best care possible" but recalled that Mandela was "at an age where medical challenges require extraordinary care".
He praised Mandela as an "unparalleled fighter".
In an interview broadcast on Saturday but recorded a day earlier, the ANC's newly elected Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa said he believed Mandela was "on the mend".
Mandela spent 27 years in apartheid prisons, including 18 years on the windswept Robben Island off Cape Town. He was released in 1990 and went on to use his prestige to push for reconciliation between whites and blacks as the bedrock of the post-apartheid "Rainbow Nation".
He stepped down in 1999 after one term in office and has been largely removed from public life for the last decade.
Mandela spent time in a Johannesburg hospital in 2011 with a respiratory condition, and again in February this year because of abdominal pains. He was released the following day after a keyhole examination showed there was nothing serious.
He has since spent most of his time in Qunu.
His fragile health prevents him from making any public appearances in South Africa, although he has continued to receive high-profile domestic and international visitors, including former U.S. president Bill Clinton in July.

Re: File won't compress - Family Tree Maker software - Family ...
It is version 2006. even though the splash screen says ver 16. I believe FTM started using the year reference in 2005. The dist sleeve says 2006 as does the help file. And it is installed (at least on my machine) in C:\Program Files\Family Tree Maker 2006\
