Cameron quits all-male club White?s amid Open golf controversy

Gentlemen?s clubs that refuse women members are a throwback to the past, according to David Cameron.

The Prime Minister believes that traditional all-male clubs, frequented by Tory MPs and even some members of his own Cabinet, look ?more to the past than they do to the future,? his spokesman said today.

Mr Cameron has previously defended his membership of White?s, the 300-year-old all-male club in St James?s, but Downing Street revealed that he had given it up in 2008.

His intervention came as golf?s Open Championship got under way today, under the shadow of a row over its male-only venue.
