Angels win fifth straight to keep pace

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Although time is running out on both the Los Angeles Angels' playoff hopes and Torii Hunter's contract, the veteran slugger will keep swinging away until it's all finished.

The way Hunter and the Angels are playing down the September stretch, they clearly don't want to be done just yet.

Hunter's RBI singles tied it in the seventh inning and ended it in the ninth, and Los Angeles kept pace in the AL wild-card race with its fifth consecutive victory, 4-3 over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night.

Erick Aybar had an early two-run double before Hunter's impressive finish for the Angels (86-69), who remained two games behind Oakland (88-67) after the other three teams in the AL wild-card race all won Wednesday. Baltimore (89-67) is a half-game ahead of the Athletics atop the wild-card race, while Tampa Bay (85-70) has won seven straight to stay one game behind the Angels.

"It's tough, because those games were over (before the Angels played)," Hunter said. "That's when I said, `I've got to bear down and make something happen."'

Something has been happening constantly for Hunter, the 37-year-old outfielder and unofficial team captain who hopes to be re-signed this winter. He has been spectacular down the stretch of his fifth season with the Angels, contributing 23 RBIs in 23 games - none bigger than the two that he conjured against Seattle.

Pinch-hitter Maicer Izturis opened the ninth with a single off Stephen Pryor (3-1) and advanced to third on a wild pitch and Peter Bourjos' bunt. Seattle walked rookie Mike Trout to face Hunter, who coolly stroked a single to center, pumping his fist as he jogged to first with the Los Angeles dugout in pursuit.

"He's been playing so well pretty much all year, especially the last two months," said Bourjos, who scored the tying run as a pinch-runner when Hunter singled in the seventh. "He's getting a lot of hits and really helping the team."

Ernesto Frieri (4-2) pitched the ninth for the Angels, whose bullpen didn't allow a hit in 3 1-3 innings after C.J. Wilson's departure.

With 16 wins in 23 games in September, Los Angeles is 17 games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 2009 season, the Angels' last playoff year. It still might not be enough to catch Oakland or Baltimore, but Hunter has faith.

"We're just laying in the weeds right now," Hunter said with a grin. "They're the gazelle."

Justin Smoak hit his third homer in two games for the Mariners, who have lost seven of nine. Brendan Ryan and Franklin Gutierrez drove in early runs, but Seattle couldn't capitalize on a solid start by Felix Hernandez, who struck out nine.

Pryor blamed himself for exacerbating the ninth-inning problems with a wild pitch.

"Trout and Hunter are both good hitters, so you kind of pick your poison there," he said. "We were trying to set up a double play there to get out of the inning. I tried to get Hunter to hit a ground ball, but I ended up giving up a soft liner over the infield."

Hernandez pitched six innings of five-hit ball, leaving with a lead before the Angels' seventh-inning rally against reliever Josh Kinney. Hernandez, who is slated to face the Angels again in Seattle next week, is 0-2 in four starts against Los Angeles this season.

Wilson, the Angels' $77.5 million left-hander, had his second straight short start in a nightmarish second half of the season. After failing to get out of the third inning against Texas last week, he gave up five hits, three walks and several hard-hit outs to the Mariners in 5 1-3 innings despite picking up his 800th career strikeout along the way.

"He had some walks here and there, but he was able to get out of some innings without giving up a lot of damage, which is important," said Seattle's Dustin Ackley, who went 0 for 4. "He let the leadoff guy on a couple of times, but he limited the damage that we were able to do in those innings when we could have broken through."

After Aybar staked the Angels to a two-run lead in the second inning, they loaded the bases before Hunter grounded out on the first pitch he saw. Aybar also reached third base in the fourth inning, but Trout's harmless flyout ended it.

Seattle evened it in the third after Wilson walked Casper Wells and Chone Figgins. Smoak put the Mariners ahead in the fourth with a long drive, his team-leading 19th of the season.

Hernandez retired nine straight after Aybar's leadoff single in the fourth, but threw 103 pitches before Kinney replaced him to start the seventh. Chris Iannetta singled with one out, and pinch-runner Bourjos scored from second when Hunter fouled off several pitches before dropping a short single into the outfield.

NOTES: Izturis was 0 for 20 as a pinch-hitter this season before connecting in the ninth. ... Scientists ID new species of monkey in Congo

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) ? A team of scientists says it has identified a new species of monkey in central Africa that had been known to the locals simply as lesula, a medium sized, slender animal that looks similar to an owl-faced monkey already known to scientists.

In findings published this week in the scientific journal Plos One, the researchers identified the new species as Cercopithecus lomamiensis, which is endemic to the lowland rainforests of central Congo. This is only the second time in the past 28 years that a species of money has been discovered, they said, highlighting the importance of preserving biodiversity in central Africa where forests are threatened by illegal logging.

Scientists began investigating after seeing a young female monkey of unknown species at the home of a school director.

Questions linger about when Rep. Jackson will work

CHICAGO (AP) ? Days after U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. was released from a hospital where he was being treated for bipolar disorder, it's still unclear when he'll return to work.

The Chicago Democrat left the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., last week and is back in Washington with his family following months out of the public eye on a secretive medical leave. But neither his office, his civil rights leader father, nor his wife, Chicago Alderman Sandi Jackson, could say when Jackson would return to the office.

Jackson spokesman Frank Watkins said Sunday that he had no information. A day earlier, Jackson's father, The Rev. Jesse Jackson, told reporters that he didn't expect his son to rush back.

"I hope he does not move quickly, because he's so anxious to function; so anxious to work. He's programmed in that direction. He wants to serve. I think his people have been quite generous to him in terms of giving him time," Jackson told reporters. "But my concern is that of a father. I have no interest in the political timetable. It's his health timetable, and there is no date certain for that."

The elder Jackson declined to give more details to The Associated Press on Sunday, except to say that his son was still under medical supervision and it was too premature to predict his work schedule.

Very little information has been available about the congressman's condition and recovery.

Jackson's office waited two weeks before disclosing that the 47-year-old congressman went on medical leave June 10 and initially described him as suffering from exhaustion. Later, it referred to his condition as a "mood disorder." Last month, his office disclosed that he was at Mayo and being treated for depression after a transfer from the Sierra Tucson Treatment Center in Arizona. The Mayo Clinic has said that Jackson was being treated for Bipolar II, which means he was suffering from periodic episodes of depression and hypomania. Hypomania is a less serious form of mania.

Jackson has received visitors, including from former U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy of Rhode Island, but his office has denied interview requests. While a Jackson aide once predicted the congressman would return to work around Labor Day, he's since been mum on the issue.

After Jackson was released from the Mayo Clinic, Sandi Jackson said he was not expected to return to work until released from doctors' care. She didn't elaborate.

The handling and timing of the medical leave has invited scrutiny, most recently from Jackson's political opponents.

Jackson is currently under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for ties to imprisoned former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich. The committee is looking into allegations Jackson was involved in discussions about raising money for Blagojevich's campaign in exchange for the then-governor appointing him to President Barack Obama's vacated U.S. Senate seat. Jackson has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.

The announcement of the leave also came just days after a former fundraiser connected to the allegations was arrested on unrelated federal medical fraud charges.

Jackson, who first took office in 1995, is seeking re-election in his Chicago-area district in November.

While he is widely expected to win, one of his little-known opponents seized the opportunity to criticize his release, including asking why Jackson would return to Washington instead of Chicago, where the family also has a home.

"We now take joy that he has been discharged from the clinic," said a statement from Republican Brian Woodworth, a college professor. "Perhaps Congressman Jackson returned to Washington, D.C., to face his pending Congressional Ethics hearing? Or did he sneak back to Washington as he had fled earlier to Arizona--to keep the new 2nd Congressional District guessing over his ability to lead?"

Jackson easily won a primary challenge earlier this year from former U.S. Rep. Debbie Halvorson. However, he had to run a vigorous campaign and spend time in new rural areas of his largely black, urban and Democratic district.
